Respecting the American Flag

These basic guidelines can help individuals, businesses and organizations display the flag respectfully. For complete instructions, consult the official VFW flag-etiquette resource.

Displaying the Flag

The flag should be displayed prominently and treated with dignity.
When displayed with other flags, the United States flag receives the position of honor.
When flown at night, the flag should be properly illuminated.
When displayed at half-staff, raise it first to the peak before lowering it to the half-staff position.

Handling the Flag

Do not allow the flag to touch the ground, floor, water or objects beneath it.
Keep the flag clean, dry and in good condition whenever possible.
A worn flag should not be discarded with ordinary household trash.
When a flag is no longer suitable for display, it should be retired in a dignified manner.

If you have a worn or damaged American flag, contact Post 759 before bringing it to the Post. We can confirm current collection arrangements or help direct you to an appropriate local option for dignified retirement.

Armed Forces Day

Recognizes Americans currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day

Honors those who died while serving in the United States military.

Flag Day

Commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States.

Independence Day

Commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Third Friday in September

POW/MIA Recognition Day

Honors former prisoners of war and Americans who remain missing.

Constitution Day

Commemorates the signing of the United States Constitution.

November 11

Veterans Day

Honors all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Pearl Harbor Day

Remembers those killed and injured during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
